Tennis Starts with Love: A Tennis Guide for Oak Park

The indoor season is almost over… but outdoor season is coming up fast! Now is an excellent time to start playing tennis for the first time or get back to it. There’s nothing like tennis to get in shape quickly – while having a smashin’ blast!

Many studies have found that tennis is one of the best workouts you can get:

  • All ages can play.
  • It improves both aerobic and anaerobic fitness.
  • It enhances speed, agility, balance, and motor skills.
  • It helps a player learn how to compete one-on-one, how to win and lose with honor and grace, and how to strategize.

Plus, it can help you expand your social network. It’s just a fun activity for young and old. And there’s nothing like a little healthy competition, right?

The tennis scoring system is actually a little bit complicated compared to other sports. The first thing you need to know is that the word “love” refers to a score of zero. So every game starts with love—simple as that. If you want to know more about tennis, you can check out the Tennis and Fitness Centre of Oak Park.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Tennis and Fitness Centre of Oak Park, a club that is co-owned by more than 30 local families. The atmosphere is relaxed and very friendly, but don’t let that fool you: They mean business on the court! Eight indoor courts are available, and in the summer, they are free of charge for members—so rain, wind and heat are no reason to cancel (or skip) a game. The club offers a wide variety of programs and classes for tennis players of all levels: Pro tennis instructors for private lessons as well as semi-private and small group lesson options, drill classes for adults and juniors, cardio tennis group workouts, and more.

You can also join a league or team if you’re interested in playing competitively. Steve Berggren, one of the co-owners, reports that some of the players are even ranked nationally. There is definitely enough to learn for every skill level at our local Tennis Centre.

In addition to all these tennis-related options, the Tennis and Fitness Centre, as the name implies, also offers all kinds of fitness based choices that are generally included with full membership privileges, including:

  • two racquetball/handball courts
  • spinning classes
  • free weights
  • weight and cardio machines
  • Cardio/Strength Circuit, Muscle Pump, and other cardio and strength classes
  • Zumba, Nia, Jazz and other dance classes

For personal fitness training, Pilates, Yoga and TRX Training, there is an additional (and very reasonable) fee. A TRX class costs $12 because there are only eight spaces available, for example.

The club is conveniently located on 301 Lake Street in Oak Park and open from 5:30 am on weekdays and 7 am on weekends with varying closing hours. Please check their website for more information or just step in and ask one of their knowledgeable staff members.
